Hantavirus is a family of viruses transmitted by rodents through feces, urine, or saliva. The IgM test detects early antibodies against both the Hantaan and Puumala strains — labs combine these because IgM is cross-reactive in the first weeks and strain distinction at the IgM level is not clinically reliable.
This test is indicated when a recent hantavirus infection is suspected — for example after symptoms such as sudden fever, headache, back pain, or kidney impairment following rodent exposure or stay in an endemic area. IgM develops within days of infection and is therefore more suitable for acute diagnostics than IgG.
The presence of IgM antibodies indicates a recent hantavirus infection. For strain identification (Puumala vs Hantaan), follow-up testing with IgG is indicated after the IgM response has subsided — typically several weeks later.
An elevated IgM titer indicates a current or very recent infection. With strong clinical suspicion and matching symptoms, medical follow-up is important: hantavirus disease can cause acute kidney impairment and may require hospitalization.
A low or undetectable IgM level makes a recent hantavirus infection unlikely. For persistent complaints or suspected past infection, consider the IgG test — that shows antibodies longer after infection.

That depends on the test. Whether fasting is required, and from what time, is clearly stated in the instructions you receive after ordering. No surprises at the counter.
It varies per analysis: from same-day to a few working days. Standard values often come back quickly; analyses that go to an external lab can take a bit longer. You get an email with a link to your digital result, including a short explanation per value.
