Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) is a hormone produced by the placenta shortly after fertilization. It is present in the blood and urine of pregnant women and is the hormone detected by pregnancy tests.
Testing hCG is useful for confirming an early pregnancy. It can also assist in monitoring the health and development of the pregnancy. Outside of pregnancy, an hCG test can also be used to detect certain tumors that produce hCG.
An hCG test can indicate whether a woman is pregnant and, in some cases, provide information about the potential health of the pregnancy. In non-pregnant individuals, a high hCG level may indicate certain forms of cancer, such as trophoblastic disease or certain testicular tumors.
A high hCG level in pregnant women may indicate a multiple pregnancy (such as twins or triplets), a molar pregnancy, or may sometimes suggest an anomaly in the pregnancy. In non-pregnant individuals, a high hCG level may indicate the presence of certain tumors.
A low hCG level may indicate a non-viable pregnancy, such as a miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy. It is important to note that hCG levels can vary between individuals and pregnancies, so a low value should always be discussed with a medical professional.
