The non-typed Herpes blood test - IgG detects the presence of IgG antibodies against the herpes simplex virus in the blood. This test does not distinguish between herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2), but only confirms whether a herpes infection has occurred.
This test is suitable for individuals who want to confirm whether they have generally been exposed to the herpes virus, without specifically distinguishing between HSV-1 or HSV-2. It can be useful for general health check-ups or for those seeking advice and peace of mind regarding previous herpes exposure.
The test indicates the general presence of IgG antibodies against the herpes virus in the blood, suggesting a past or current infection. This indicates that the individual has come into contact with the herpes virus at some point.
A high level of IgG antibodies suggests a past or current infection with the herpes virus. This means that the individual has been exposed to the virus in the past, and the virus may be latent or inactive in the body.
A low level of IgG antibodies may indicate a lack of exposure to the herpes virus or that the infection occurred very recently and the body has not yet produced detectable levels of antibodies.
The scientific support for this test within mainstream Dutch healthcare is limited. The test is not included in NHG/FMS standard guidelines.

Deze test detecteert IgG-antilichamen tegen herpes simplex virus zonder onderscheid tussen HSV-1 en HSV-2. Binnen de Nederlandse reguliere zorg wordt voor diagnostiek van herpesinfecties de voorkeur gegeven aan directe virusdetectie (PCR/NAAT) bij aanwezige laesies. Een niet-uitgesplitste IgG-test heeft beperkte klinische waarde omdat deze niet aangeeft welk type herpes aanwezig is en geen onderscheid maakt tussen orale en genitale herpes, wat voor behandeling en counseling essentieel is.

After ordering we generate a referral letter and email you the instructions. You pick a collection point yourself and book an appointment there. Blood is drawn at the location, processed at the lab, and your result arrives digitally.
Often within a few working days. How soon you can be seen depends on how busy the location is and the type of analysis. For specialist analyses we first ship collection materials, which takes a bit longer.
At most collection points yes. Some accept walk-ins. This is clearly indicated per location. You choose the location that works best for you.
That depends on the test. Whether fasting is required, and from what time, is clearly stated in the instructions you receive after ordering. No surprises at the counter.
It varies per analysis: from same-day to a few working days. Standard values often come back quickly; analyses that go to an external lab can take a bit longer. You receive your laboratory report securely by email. It lists the measured values, units, reference ranges and any flags added by the laboratory.
