Intrinsic Factor (IF) is a protein produced by the stomach. It is crucial for the absorption of vitamin B12 from food in the intestines. Without sufficient IF, the body cannot effectively absorb vitamin B12, which is essential for the production of red blood cells and the function of the nervous system.
A test for Intrinsic Factor may be recommended if there are symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency, such as fatigue, weakness, memory loss, or neurological symptoms. It is also useful for diagnosing certain conditions, such as pernicious anemia, an autoimmune disease where the body produces insufficient IF.
The amount of Intrinsic Factor in the body can help determine the cause of vitamin B12 deficiency. It indicates whether the deficiency is caused by a problem with IF production or by other factors.
A high level of Intrinsic Factor is usually not problematic and does not directly indicate a specific condition. The focus is mainly on detecting low levels of IF.
A low level of Intrinsic Factor may indicate pernicious anemia or other conditions affecting vitamin B12 absorption. This can lead to a range of health issues, including anemia and neurological damage.
This test has clinical value for specific complaints or indications, but is not intended as screening without symptoms.
Rationale for this test
De bepaling van intrinsic factor antistoffen is een gevestigde test binnen de Nederlandse reguliere geneeskunde voor het diagnosticeren van pernicieuze anemie en atrofische gastritis. De test heeft echter een beperkte sensitiviteit (ongeveer 50%), waardoor een negatieve uitslag de diagnose niet uitsluit. De test is vooral waardevol bij specifieke klachten van vitamine B12-tekort en niet bedoeld als screening zonder klachten.
