Strongyloides stercoralis is a parasitic roundworm that primarily occurs in tropical and subtropical regions. The infection, known as strongyloidiasis, occurs when the worm's larvae penetrate the human body through the skin, usually by coming into contact with contaminated soil.
Testing for Strongyloides stercoralis is important for individuals who live in or have traveled to areas where this parasite is endemic, especially if they exhibit symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, and coughing. It is also crucial for people with a weakened immune system, as the infection can progress more severely.
The presence of Strongyloides stercoralis in the body may indicate an infection with the parasite. The test detects specific antibodies or the parasite itself in the body, suggesting an active or recent infection.
A high level of antibodies against Strongyloides stercoralis or the detection of the parasite itself indicates an active infection. This may mean that the parasite is multiplying in the body and medical treatment is necessary.
A low level may indicate an early stage of infection, a previous exposure to the parasite, or successful treatment of the infection. It is important to discuss the results with a physician for an accurate diagnosis and treatment.

De test heeft bewezen klinische waarde voor het opsporen van langdurige asymptomatische infecties die anders gemist kunnen worden.
