Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. The TPHA test (Treponema pallidum hemagglutination assay) is a blood test that specifically looks for antibodies against this bacterium, which can be an indication of an active or past infection.
Testing for syphilis is important because it can help with the early detection of the infection, which is essential for effective treatment. It is recommended if you have symptoms of syphilis, before starting a new sexual relationship, during pregnancy, or as part of standard STI screenings, especially if you belong to a high-risk group.
The presence of antibodies against Treponema pallidum in the blood indicates that someone has been exposed to the bacterium that causes syphilis. Depending on additional test results, this may indicate an active infection or a previous exposure.
A high titer level in a TPHA test may point to a recent or active syphilis infection. This requires medical attention and potentially treatment to prevent further health damage and stop the spread to others.
A low titer level may indicate a previous exposure to syphilis for which treatment has already been received, or it may indicate a very early infection where the titer has not yet risen. Further evaluation and potentially additional tests are needed to fully understand the meaning.
