Toxocara Dog Roundworm IgG is a biomarker that detects the presence of antibodies against the Toxocara parasite in the blood. This parasite is often found in dogs and cats and can cause toxocariasis in humans, an infection that primarily affects children who come into contact with contaminated soil.
This test is particularly useful for people showing symptoms of toxocariasis, such as coughing, fever, abdominal pain, or vision problems, and for those who have frequent contact with dogs or cats or live in areas where this parasite is common. It aids in diagnosing the infection so that appropriate treatment can be initiated.
The presence of IgG antibodies against Toxocara in the blood indicates a current or previous infection with the Toxocara parasite. This helps physicians understand whether the symptoms a person is experiencing might be caused by toxocariasis.
A high level of Toxocara IgG antibodies indicates an active or recent infection. This may mean the person has recently been exposed to the parasite and that the immune system is actively fighting the infection.
A low level of antibodies may indicate a lack of exposure to the parasite or a successful treatment of a previous infection. It can also mean that the person is not infected.
