Vitamin B3, also known as niacin, is an essential nutrient that the body uses to convert energy from food, keep the skin and nerves healthy, and regulate cholesterol levels.
A test for vitamin B3 is useful for checking whether you have a deficiency or an excess, both of which can impact your health. People with a restricted diet, chronic health conditions, or certain genetic disorders may be at higher risk for a vitamin B3 deficiency or excess.
The vitamin B3 test indicates the amount of niacin in the blood. This can help in diagnosing nutritional deficiencies or in monitoring the health of people using supplements or medications that affect niacin levels.
A high level of vitamin B3 can indicate excessive intake, either through diet or supplements, and may lead to niacin toxicity. Symptoms of toxicity include skin rash, itching, nausea, and liver damage.
A low level of vitamin B3 can indicate a deficiency, which may lead to pellagra, a condition characterized by dermatitis, diarrhea, dementia, and in severe cases, death.

Vitamine B3 (niacine) is een essentiële voedingsstof met een goed onderbouwde rol in de energiehuishouding en gezondheid van huid en zenuwen. Een tekort kan leiden tot pellagra, een ernstige aandoening die in de Nederlandse zorgrichtlijnen wordt erkend. Echter, routinematige screening op vitamine B3 bij gezonde personen zonder specifieke klachten of risicofactoren is niet opgenomen in de standaard-richtlijnen van NHG of FMS. De test heeft klinische waarde bij specifieke indicaties zoals alcoholmisbruik, malabsorptie of verdenking op pellagra.

After ordering we generate a referral letter and email you the instructions. You pick a collection point yourself and book an appointment there. Blood is drawn at the location, processed at the lab, and your result arrives digitally.
Often within a few working days. How soon you can be seen depends on how busy the location is and the type of analysis. For specialist analyses we first ship collection materials, which takes a bit longer.
At most collection points yes. Some accept walk-ins. This is clearly indicated per location. You choose the location that works best for you.
That depends on the test. Whether fasting is required, and from what time, is clearly stated in the instructions you receive after ordering. No surprises at the counter.
It varies per analysis: from same-day to a few working days. Standard values often come back quickly; analyses that go to an external lab can take a bit longer. You get an email with a link to your digital result, including a short explanation per value.
