Vitamin D3, also known as cholecalciferol, is an essential vitamin that helps the body absorb calcium and phosphorus, which is crucial for building and maintaining strong bones. Our body produces vitamin D3 when our skin is exposed to sunlight, but it can also be obtained through diet or supplements.
Testing vitamin D3 is useful to determine if you have sufficient vitamin D in your body for good bone and immune system health. It is especially important in areas with low sunlight, for older adults, for people with darker skin, or for people who spend little time outdoors due to health reasons.
The test indicates the amount of vitamin D3 in the blood. An adequate level suggests that the body has enough vitamin D for the maintenance of bone health and a well-functioning immune system.
A high level of vitamin D3 may indicate excessive vitamin D supplementation. Although rare, this can lead to hypercalcemia, a condition where there is too much calcium in the blood, which can cause various health issues, such as kidney stones or bone pain.
A low level of vitamin D3 indicates a deficiency, which can lead to bone weakness, osteoporosis, and an increased risk of fractures. In children, a severe deficiency can cause rickets, a condition that leads to skeletal deformities.
This test is included in Dutch healthcare guidelines and is regularly used for its respective indications.

After ordering we generate a referral letter and email you the instructions. You pick a collection point yourself and book an appointment there. Blood is drawn at the location, processed at the lab, and your result arrives digitally.
Often within a few working days. How soon you can be seen depends on how busy the location is and the type of analysis. For specialist analyses we first ship collection materials, which takes a bit longer.
At most collection points yes. Some accept walk-ins. This is clearly indicated per location. You choose the location that works best for you.
That depends on the test. Whether fasting is required, and from what time, is clearly stated in the instructions you receive after ordering. No surprises at the counter.
