Frequently asked questions

How does it work from order to result?

After ordering we generate a referral letter and email you the instructions. You pick a collection point yourself and book an appointment there. Blood is drawn at the location, processed at the lab, and your result arrives digitally.

How quickly can I get tested?

Often within a few working days. How soon you can be seen depends on how busy the location is and the type of analysis. For specialist analyses we first ship collection materials, which takes a bit longer.

Do I need to book an appointment?

At most collection points yes. Some accept walk-ins. This is clearly indicated per location. You choose the location that works best for you.

Do I need to fast before the test?

That depends on the test. Whether fasting is required, and from what time, is clearly stated in the instructions you receive after ordering. No surprises at the counter.

When and how do I receive my result?

Usually within a few working days after collection. Turnaround time varies by analysis; analyses sent to an external lab can take longer. You receive your laboratory report securely by email. It lists the measured values, units, reference ranges and any flags added by the laboratory.

Where can I go for collection?

We work with 1,000+ collection points across the Netherlands. After ordering you'll see which locations near you are available and you pick where you'd like to go.

Frequently asked questions about hormone blood tests

How much does a hormone blood test cost?

The price depends on which hormones you have tested. You can choose individual markers such as testosterone or cortisol, or more extensive hormone panels for men and women. You always see the fixed price in advance, with no surprises afterwards.

Which hormones can you check with a blood test?

You can have testosterone, oestrogen, progesterone and cortisol measured, as well as thyroid-related markers such as TSH and fertility hormones such as AMH and FSH. We offer separate panels for men and women that combine the most relevant measurements.

Can I take a hormone test without a GP referral?

Yes. At BloedCheckup, you can order your hormone test directly online without a GP referral. You choose which markers to measure, book an appointment at a collection location near you and receive your results by email.

When is a hormone test useful?

A hormone test can be useful if you have symptoms such as tiredness, mood swings, weight changes or reduced libido. It can also provide valuable information about your hormone balance when you are trying to conceive or going through menopause.

How reliable is a hormone blood test?

Samples are analysed in ISO-certified laboratories that also work with hospitals. Your results include reference ranges to help you interpret them. If you are unsure about a result, discuss it with your GP.

Check your hormone levels with a blood test

Do you often feel tired or notice mood swings you cannot quite explain? Hormones influence many of these processes, and even a small change can sometimes leave you feeling out of balance. A hormone blood test shows where your key hormone levels stand. You choose which levels to check and the tests that match your concerns. Having your hormone levels in black and white helps you make informed choices about your health.

What do hormones do in your body?

Hormones are chemical messengers that travel through your bloodstream. They regulate processes such as metabolism, energy levels, fertility and mood. They are produced by glands including the thyroid, adrenal glands, ovaries and testicles, which together form the endocrine system. Changes in hormone production can cause vague symptoms that are difficult to explain. A blood test measures the concentration of specific hormones and shows whether a result falls within the reference range. This turns a feeling that something is not quite right into something you can measure.

Which hormones can you have tested?

Which hormones are useful to measure depends on your symptoms and circumstances. At BloedCheckup, you can check levels including:

  • Oestrogen and progesterone, which are relevant to menopause and trying to conceive.

  • AMH and FSH if you would like more insight into your fertility.

  • Testosterone, which influences energy, muscle mass, libido and mood in men.

  • Cortisol, a hormone released in response to stress that also affects your sleep–wake cycle.

We offer separate packages for men and women, so you can select the measurements that suit your needs.

Symptoms that may point to a hormone imbalance

A hormone imbalance can develop gradually, with symptoms that resemble everyday tiredness or the effects of a busy life. If you recognise several of these signs, a blood test can give you more insight into your hormone levels. Several symptoms may occur together, affecting your energy and daily life.

  • Persistent tiredness and low energy.

  • Mood swings and irritability.

  • Unwanted weight gain or weight loss.

  • Reduced libido or fertility difficulties.

  • Poor sleep and night sweats.

  • Menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes.

Symptoms vary from person to person and between hormones, so a targeted test provides the most relevant information.

Would you also like to check your thyroid?

Alongside hormonal symptoms, do you notice signs that may relate to your thyroid, such as tiredness or changes in weight? Explore the options for a thyroid blood test too.
